In the 2-Pair Inventions booklet, I've put myself (or, rather, The Lace Museum <g>) at the mercy of the individual lacemaker's goodwill... After stating that all the profits from the sale of it are intended for The Lace Museum, I added:
"If you're using patterns from a borrowed copy, please send a small donation to:" and gave the Museum's address.
So, the permission to copy is *definitely* implied here. As is an appeal to the individual's conscience :) We'll have to see how that goes, but my impression is that, by and large, lacemakers are *nice people*. In fact, some of the people *buying* the booklet have been sending "rounded off" checks and asking me to pass the difference on to The Museum (and trusting me to do it, too <g>) Just as I trust an Arachnean to make decent copies of the entire booklet for her students (sent her an un-bound version of the booklet for that purpose), keep track of how many, and then send just the $3.85 per copy either to me to pass on, or directly to The Museum (if it's acquired PayPal facilities by then)... I think Liz's horror student is more of an exception than a rule. At least... I prefer to think so :)
But I've kept the copyright of my patterns, just as Paula Harten, who designed a wire variation of one of the centres, has kept hers. So that if, at some point in time, one of us wants to use the patterns in some other way (say, "collected works of"), we still can.
