Does anyone have a pattern or know how to make a "Bobbin Roll?"
Sylvia,
Hi,
A bobbin roll is just a group of little pockets that hold bobbins. You can use about any style you want to.
Method one: A simple one would start with fabric 12 x 18 inches. Either use one layer of sturdy fabric and serge the edges, or use two pieces of pretty cotton cloth and sew the edges together by any method desired. Many people put back sides together, sew around, turn inside out and press.
Take your finished piece of fabric. Fold up one long edge 3 inches. This fold forms your pockets. Sew dividing lines about 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 inches apart along the folded edge up the 3" width. It'll look like this. l l l l l l l l l
The top edge will fold over the pockets and the tails of bobbins peeking out of the pockets. You can sew the middle of a ribbon at one end. Roll the packet up and tie with the ribbon.
Method two: Another style would use a piece of fabric about 14 or 15 inches tall (and as wide as you wish) and fold up both top and bottom edges 3 inches. This makes two rows of pockets -- one on the top and one on the bottom. Sew the dividing lines on both rows. Roll up from one side. This may need two ribbons instead of one to tie securely.
Method three -- two rows: Use a fabric that's 21-22 inches tall, and as wide as desired (12 to 18 inches). Starting at the bottom, fold up 3 inches. Pin. Turn over. Fold up the pinned side 5 inches. Fold down 3 inches, and the rest folds up. I tried to draw the idea.

Sew the vertical dividing lines through both rows of folds. The top flap will fold down over the bobbins. Roll, and tie with a ribbon as in the others.
I like this better for two rows because they are both facing the same direction and they don't fall out as easily.
Hint -- DO NOT use silk fabric. It's too slick. The bobbins will slide out all the time.
You can sew the dividing lines as far apart or as close together as you need to fit the bobbins you have. You can also adjust the depth of the folds for larger or smaller bobbins. If you have only Midlands, pockets 1 inch wide work fine, but if you have continentals, make a little larger pocket.
I hope this gives you some ideas. There's no one way that's 'right'.
These are just three versions I own at the moment, and I have seen others. Make it any way you want to that let's you hold your bobbins, especially wound bobbins, so they don't get tangled up.
Check the Lacefairy webpage. She probably has instructions there for at least one version.
Best wishes,
