I generally only use a bobbin roll to keep empty bobbins on. As each roll is made from different fabric, I know which bobbins are in which roll.
When I wind bobbins I put them on a bobbin tree (a supported fabric covered rolling pin). I usually only put wound bobbins in a bobbin roll if I'm likely to need to take them somewhere and might need them to add to a project or replace a pair.
