We're just back from a little vacation on the Leelanau peninsula of
Michigan. We rented a mini-cabin, walked along the rocky lakeshore, and
visited the lighthouse museum.

But the most interesting thing to me was in the fog signal building, they
had the wedding dress of one of the lighthouse keeper's wives, and around
the neck of the dress what the card described as a "crocheted scarf".

This was actually a band, about three inches wide, of extremely fine lace
knitting. The thread was thinner than size 80 tatting thread. The dress
and card were in a glass case, so I couldn't examine it closely, but I'm
sure I left my share of nose smudgies!

The museum is managed by the township and opened daily by volunteers. If
you ever make your way up to this beautiful area, that's the one and only
lace thing there is to see.
