Sulochona kindly sent me a scan of her lovely mat a few days ago. Now that I am free of unexpected visitors I have time to tell you all how proud I am of Sulochona. Once again she has made a piece of lace without a drawn pattern, freely working from a photograph in the Traditional Lace section of the RPL book.
I think it is great that she has adapted the design to include colour. Kathleen Waller and I like the effect of colour in the lace. However, I think this has to be done with a certain amount of restraint and Sulochona has managed to get the effect just right. Kathleen (sister of the late Margaret Hamer) is making crochet flowers in shaded threads. Here the shape of the pattern motif tends to dictate where the colour changes will come, but sometimes it works out perfectly. Sometimes it pays to stop and cut the thread to re-start with the colour change where you want it. Even then it does not always come right.
