Peach's question about Stumpwork didn't draw out a response from her, I have to asssume she's off at the moment <g>) but, until she responds with real knowledge,............. I did actually read Jean's query about the stumpwork but have just invested in a new laptop and am having the usual problems and difficulty finding my way, never having used one before! A young whiz kid with computers who works for my son, came round straight from work last evening, spent two hours here, then had to go pick up his girlfriend from the station. Needless to say, my problem has still not been sorted out and he went off on holiday this morning for two weeks! Can't find the message from Jean but if my memory serves me correctly, it was something to do with her C & G tutor saying that she could not incorporate machine embroidery with Stumpwork. I have no wish to 'tread on anyone's toes' or offend, but all I can say on the subject is that I feel Roy & Barbara Hirst can take full credit for the current revival of Stumpwork and without them none of us would probably be doing it now. Many, indeed most of their works, include machine embroidery and it is Roy who does all the machine embroidery whilst Barbara does the needlelace and hand stitching. Many lacemakers will have seen their Millenium casket, which bears an abundance of machine embroidery. Some of you no doubt will recall the talk I gave at Indianapolis for IOLI when I included slides of the casket. It is just beautiful! I have also seen some of Elizabeth Ligeti's 'mixed lace' pieces combining needlelace and Bedfordshire bobbin lace. They are exquisite and the two compliment each other so well. She was also very generous in giving credit to her sources of inspiration. We are continually being told that 'we must not live in the past' and just recreate and religiously copy our predecessors, but that we should be more creative. We all know that 'you can't please of the people all of the time' but you can please YOURSELF all of the time. However, if it is for C & G then she must do as the tutor instructs, get her certification and THEN 'please herself'. Having taught C & G you can take if from me, that one must adhere to the syllabus.
