They are called captured rings. They are turned but the bobbin maker whilst
on the lathe. It requires that the maker turns the top of the ring then
"undercuts" it, so that it becomes loose.
The rings on the Brenda's Thumper, are made from pewter. She is lucky to have
an example with them all intact!
The all wood bobbin was made by a friend's husband who's speciality is marquetry rather than bobbin making.
