For anyone who wants to go further into the origins, properties and history 
of linen and other threads, may I reccommend an authoritative book by Pat 
Earnshaw:  "Threads of Lace from Source to Sink"  (Gorse Publications 1989)  
ISBN 0 9513891 1 4
I don't know if its still in print, but it should be available through 
libraries.
