Greetings, fellow lacemakers I'm preparing to start the "les lauriers" pattern from Fouriscot & Arpin's book on Cluny de Brioude, and intend to buy my thread for it at the NEC on Saturday. The pattern calls for 50/2 linen, but the last lot of linen thread I bought was horribly slubby and I want to do it in a particular colour,so I'm wondering about using cotton or silk (it's for a very special present). Does anyone who uses linen a lot (I mostly do much finer lace, so usually use cotton) have an opinion as to whether any of the regularly available brands (Bockens/Bouc/Friesia/?) is likely to be less slubby than the others? I've looked up equivalent thicknesses of silk and cotton in Brenda's "threads for lace; the most obvious silk threads to look at are all 3-ply: Mulberry Silks 70/3, And Pipers' silk gimp 45/3 and Twisted Gloss 45/3. Has anyone tried these on beds or cluny laces? How did you find them? What about Egyptian Cotton 24/3? For the cotton equivalents, I've got quite a list of possible equivalents but don't know whether they're all still in production - guess I'll just have to keep my eyes open. (and if I can't find a suitable thread the right shade I'll just have to make it in white and dye the finished lace!) Beth in a cold and misty Cheshire, NW England
