Dear Julie & other interested Friends,
When adding in a pair of bobbins at the gimp in point ground lace
(Chantilly, Bucks Point), should I add in a pair of bobbins or 2 single bobbins? Does
it matter?
When I first started Chantilly, I always wound a new pair for add ins such as you have described. However, I've changed my tactics over the years. For me, it all depends on what's happening in the design as to whether I add a brand new pair or two separate bobbins which had been previously thrown out.
If it's a very exposed area, or at the start of a flower petal I always wind a new pair. Then as other bobbins may be getting a bit low in thread, I will use this new bobbin as the worker in half stitch.
If, however, a new pair is just needed to help fill in the number of passives in an area, then I'll use 2 bobbins which have been cut off. But I don't do it like you do. I simply knot the two bobbins together to make a pair, then hang this knot on a pin about 1" further back in the work. I find that when I cut the ends off later, there's no unravelling or coming apart. After all, the threads are woven in even as passives. I would also make sure though, that this pair is NOT thrown out at the bottom of that petal, but continue on to do some more work. I always throw out bobbins which are running low on thread.
Hope this is of some help
