Consider a similar situation in music: half a century ago, lovers of contemporary music wouldn't have sat still for anything that wasn't within the twelve-tone scale. Now here we are in the 21stC and the 12-tone scale, while sometimes still heard, seems rather quaint. Nice, but dated. Harmonies -- good God, even the occasional major third -- are everywhere to be heard; and still the music is undeniably contemporary.
Notions of beauty do change, but could we do without the machine-guns?
