There is a wonderful artist here, whose medium is metalwork embroidery. Merydie Fjarlie uses these magnetic fasteners for the pieces that she wears as jewellery. You can see some of her work at:

By the way, related to the discussion of lace as art, she regularly sells her larger goldwork embroidery for thousands of dollars. But they are works of art, beautifully designed and made. And as you can see from the above site, her smaller pieces are handled by a fine arts gallery. I think she is the only non-painter that they handle.
