I'm a mathematician who became a (pedal)cyclist and then a lacemaker. Maths for me is all about spatial awareness and shapes; I see maths and all ordered systems as pictures, a very mild form of synasthesia. This leads directly to a love of pattern and order. My mother and grandmothers competed to teach me various textile crafts as a child, so I've gone from crochet via knitting, tatting, embroidery especially counted into lace.
