Which doesn't tell you much!
The "40" refers to the thickness of a single ply within the thread, but "Cotton thread size 40" could be anything from 2 ply such as Aurifil Mako 40wt which is a bit finer than a regular "all-purpose" type sewing machine threads to DMC Cordonnet 40 which is a fairly thick 6 ply thread.


I'm not really familiar with the US knitting needle sizes - maybe that would give a clue to a more experienced knitter than me.
