This has been an interesting thread to take note of -- 2008, you say? :) The son will be 9 then, of an age to appreciate a trip to the Netherlands. When we visited in the fall of 1998, we saw lots of lace. It was stored in -- what to call them? -- like drawers only vertical, big metal leaves with glass faces, hinged at the back, so that you pulled out each one to look at each side. There were dozens of them, so much gorgeous lace. They were in a big gallery with dim lighting to protect the fibers. I dimly remember, having been jet-lagged, that one exhibit was "The Tooth of Time", and showed deterioration in cloth items. Some of it was from metallic-salt dyes: silk fabric literally cut to tiny shreds from the microscopic salt crystals of the dye. Some of it was from restoration work, where faded colors had been touched up, and the touch-up dye had reacted with the original dye. Some was from glues or gums that had been used to mount pieces for display. It was fascinating, sad, and instructive! We never know when something we are doing to save a piece might end up disintegrating it.
