Hi Mary -

I became very interested in Milanese lace because I was so impressed with
Tamara's designs, and since she lives not far from here and we have become
good friends, I decided to learn to make this lace.

At the first workshop I attended, I had supplied myself with small belgium
bobbins. But they were only "single headed", and the silk threads I used
kept hopping off the bobbin (I later learned that if I wound on the bottom
part of the "throat", leaving about 1/4" free for the hitch, I wouldn't
need a double head). But... during this workshop I had a difficult time.
I bought some of the "Netherlands" bobbins that you can see on the websites
of many vendors, and they had double heads and were a vast improvement over
simple Belgium bobbins. BUT... a year or two later, I discovered the
International Square bobbins, and had I not already invested in the
"Netherlands" bobbins, I would have bought these for certain. They are
absolutely the best for the purpose... no unnecessary turnings (pretty,
but get in the way with sewings), and they have a double head, AND - best
of all - the squared off shape of the bulb keeps the bobbins from rolling
about on the pillow and from untwisting the thread as you work. An ideal
bobbin for Milanese, in my opinion.
