Hi Jenny and everyone

As a vendor I make a nine block pillow as there seemed to be a need for it from lacemakers. And you seem to be headed in the right direction. A tray to capture the blocks will make the unit easier to use, however. Especially if you are moving up work while the bobbins and pattern is still attached. On the other hand, start with what you have. A pillow with no tray is better then no pillow at all.

I supply my pillows with eight blocks and two half blocks for moving up. I also build the tray with rounded corners but supply the blocks as squares. That way you can cut the corners if you like or cover all of them square and move them at will. As a lace maker I have found them quite handy as one can pop out a block with work on it, replace the space with a spare block and the pillow is clean for a fresh pattern. AI also have one project where all of the blocks are half blocks because I am doing a wide yardage and must move all three blocks up at the same time.

Another thing to consider with the pillow is size of blocks. I make 5-1/2" blocks for a 16-1/2" wide pillow held in with 1/4" side supports. Peter at Snowgoose makes a 5" block for his pillows for a 15" pillow. So a little smaller pillow will decrease the tummy poking syndrome. I have also make a couple of 7" block pillows for special projects but they are big.
