Thanks for all of the help, everyone. I'm sorry if anyone was scared off by the way I phrased my original questions, but I'm studying Physics and Chemistry at uni, so instead of looking at, say, temperature and time, I was investigating thickness of thread and apparent weight code :o)
The Mettler stuff might be a bit fine, but so far the only threads that have broken have been sat on the bobbin for the past 10 or 12 years and the head of the bobbin is a bit frayed, so it was understandable. I plan on making the next pattern in colour (Venus threads) just because I can. I'll probably order a copy of the book itself next month when I get the next installment of my loan.
