1. What is the purpose of the spangles? Weight? Yes
Decoration? yes
Also they stop the bobbin from rolling on the pillow - which is one of the main benefits as far as I'm concerned.
Some people find it hard to do sewings with spangles - I personally don't find it any harder, but then I have worked for so long with spangled bobbins.
2. Should you buy bobbins in pairs? Not really
If in pairs, why?
Similar weights and lengths are moderately helpful when working. Weight can be especially important for very fine threads.
Aesthetically you might prefer it.
But, if you are working half stitch the bobbins in the pairs are split from each other anyway, so it doesn't really help or look any better.
