Hi
The hair-lace is a brilliant idea! Unfortunately, I'm the only person I
know who has hair that's suitable :-) I did try to 4-plait my hair once,
but it just looked a mess and I ran out of fingers to hold everything
behind my head. I'd love to find someone I could try a French plait with 4
strands - the extra hair coming in at the sides might work a bit like pins
on cloth stitch and hold it all flat.
While we're on the subject, it is possible to plait with 5 or 6 strands -
you just need to do another over/under in the middle. I haven't tried 7
yet, but I believe it's possible in exactly the same way.
Having been inspired by plaits and the woven belts that are in all the
shops right now, I've come up with this design for a belt that's based
around the Beds bookmarks I've been working through and the bracelet that
was put on the Lace Guild site at Easter. I'll investigate different thick
threads and beads the next time I go to Hobbycraft.

(The lines are all 4-plaits) The red and black lines form the main
structure of the belt, the pink lines will act as a "stiffener" so the belt
can't be pulled out of shape and the blue blobs are beads. It'll probably
work out to be about 1 1/2" wide and there might be tape or ribbon of some
form woven between the pink bits. The final design will probably be a bit
prettier and will need picots or something to make the plaits turn.
Can anyone give me any ideas as to the practicalities of this? :-) I'm not
yet sure what I'll make it on. My pillow is only a 16" cookie pillow which
clearly won't be suitable, although I'm currently considering using a
rolled-up camping mat made from smooth foam as a bolster pillow and bodging
a roller together somehow. Bobbins are my next concern, although the way
Mark used clothes pegs on his daughter's hair may also work here. I may
have to substitute fine, sharp nails as I think they'll work out cheaper
than long divider-style pins or the ones with coloured glass tops.
