Thank you for all the useful replies. I had picked on sewing cotton simply
because it is readily available. I am off on my travels north on Sunday and,
during my second week, I will be staying with someone who keeps saying she
would like to learn bobbin lace. I thought I would lend her a basic pillow
(i.e.
the kind I learned on), a few pairs of bobbins and some pins. I plan on
doing some prickings for her and have bought her Bridget Cook's "The Torchon
lace
workbook".to give to her. So I decided to go with the thread for the first
few prickings in this book - cotton perle 5. I thought I had some of this
thread but have just discovered that it is no. 8 that I have and I really
cannot
visualise no.5 at all. To top it all I have mislaid Brenda's book!!!!
Can anyone advise if I am likely to find perle 5 in The Embroidery Shop in
Edinburgh? Failing that how many strands of DMC embroidery silk/floss would be
the equivalent of no.5? The lady in question has an ample supply of that.
While I want to give her the opportunity to start a) I shall be nearly 600
miles
away after one week with her and b) I'm not sure how much time she'll give to
it.

I had thought about the snake but that would mean hauling up some of my
equipment and the car will be full to overflowing as it is.
