LG, *please* try to arrange for your and IOLI's fliers/info-brochures
to be available and easily visble during that exhibit... And add
something inviting the visitors to come and see the IOLI exhibits
during the Convention while you're at it :)
The reason I'm saying this is that I have personal experience of what
such info can do, even if it travels via a convoluted road. I spent the
first 8 months of '89 teaching myself lacemaking (from *a* book), which
meant: making myself a pillow, carving bobbins by hand, hounding every
needleworks shop in vicinity in case they might have some
suitable/usable threadd on hand, and writing to all the (US) addresses
listed as vendors and lace groups at the back of the book... And all my
letters came back with "address unknown" - the information was
outdated. It was all very frustrating and, if I weren't naturally
obsessive and obstinate, I'd have quit, and gone back to miniature
needlepoint (sweaty hands or no).
But, sometime in August, I got a little flier from my stepdaughter,
with a note: "would this be of any use to you?" It was a flier
advertising the IOLI Convention... The event itself was over and done
with by then, but the flier had information on how to become a member,
where to send the dues, etc. Which I did, immediately, and pretty soon
I was drooling over Vol 10, #1, Fall 1989, happy as a pig in slops...
:) All those vendors, with *current* addresses! Patterns! Articles!
Photos! I was no longer alone, howling in the wilderness...
It was because of my membership in IOLI, that I went to Denver for a
workshop (in '93, I think) and, for the first time, saw *other people*
handling bobbins :) The workshop itself proved not to be so great, but
I made a friend - the first "meeting of the minds" I experienced in my
20 yrs in the US. My friend, in early June of '95, steered me to
Arachne (then in it's second month of existence <g>). The rest - as the
saying goes - is history...
My stepdaughter picked up the flier in a museum; I think it must have
been the same one (I went there in '93)... She was volunteering there
in the costume dept (being skinny she could wear some of the costumes,
when the Museum had a "street show" to make people more aware of it)
and noticed the flier. Knowing how obsessed I was with lace (I was the
butt of the family jokes), she kindly picked it up, and sent it to me,
because she's the kind who feels everyone should be able to pursue
their obsessions, if that's what it takes to make them happy...
So, perhaps, if there are IOLI fliers visible at *this* Convention,
another lacemeaker/potential lacemaker will be made happy also :)
