which makes me wonder if this piece might be a communion cup cover. I know they had such covers in lace, but I have no idea what size it ought to be.
Or a pall cloth; to cover the face of a corpse in the coffin? I've read somewhere that a lot of so called 'hankies' were originally intended for that purpose.
