Yes, I agree that the Rocky Mountain Lace Guild did a terrific job in hosting
this year's convention. Vasna, Cindy, Helen & everyone else in the group
should be proud of what they achieved - a week that all attendees enjoyed
thoroughly.

It was fun educating other lacemakers about Estonia, & I have promised
Cathy Kozlowski that I will write a review of the 3 Estonian books that I've
donated to the IOLI Library. One that I donated last year is currently listed
under the Knitted Lace section (& includes an English translation for the
symbols) & the other 2 will be listed under Bobbin Lace section when
next year's Handbook is published. But I think the on-line library listings
need to be updated.

I finally arrived home on Sunday afternoon with very little sleep & went
to bed about 9pm & slept through to 7am. Woke up to the sound of rain.
Thankfully today (Tuesday) is pleasantly sunny.

Helen told me that I was the only person to put 2 pieces into the lace
competition. I was going to enter only one piece into the 'original design'
section but realized that I had a penguin that I had finished early last year
& that if I mounted it I could enter it in the 'technical proficiency' section.
So I did. A lady told me after the banquet that she voted for my penguin
& wanted to know where I got the pattern for it . I told her "The Penguin
Pattern Book" published by the UK Lace Guild. But I'd made a few small
changes to the very simple design.

I wasn't among the prize winners, this time, because my "Stonewall Under
Snow is Silent" was framed with fabric that was blue with silver snowflakes
& wind swirls, & according to the judges the matting was "a disaster" &
"distracted from the lace". Now I know that it is better to use a flat colour
for the mounting. Obviously, not everyone, especially judges, like art that
has been mounted in a colourful way.

I was somewhat disappointed with the judge's "constructive criticisms".
Why do judges use the word "nice" when there are better words which
are more complimentary? One judge wrote that "You have such nice
ideas technically & those are completely invisible in the presentation" &
the other comment was "This piece is very nice but..." Were they looking
at it from 5 feet away?

If anyone wants to see my penguin, I've put it up on the webshots album.
My apologies for venting, but thanks for listening,
Pene
