I just wanted to let everyone know that the missing piece of lace that Alice Howell mentioned after conference has been found - thank you Margaret - and it arrived home safely, yesterday. It was my little knitted doily, and it had hitched a ride home on the back of one of the other Oregon lacemaker's exhibit items.
I appreciate everyone's efforts looking through all of the exhibit items, tablecloths and other display materials trying to locate the doily both during and after the conference, but I'd like to send a special "thank you" to Helen Bell. She did an excellent job coordinating the exhibit room and had great controls in place - it was just a fluke that my doily took a walk, stuck to the back of another item during take-down. She worked tirelessly to find my doily and was even more relieved than I when it was found. The doily has been grounded for going out without permission. :-) I had a great time at the conference; I've just been too buried at work to read or send many emails until today. If I repeat someone else's descriptions, forgive me. My morning class was "attaching lace to fabric" with Nancy Evans. She provided antique linen and lace yardage to each student for our class project - a beautiful little baby bonnet. We learned several French hand-sewing techniques including rolled hems, pulled thread hemstitching, insertions, gathering and some fagoting stitches to attach two pieces together. My bonnet is almost done - I've decided to add a bit of whitework embroidery to it, first. When I finally get some lace finished, I'll be able to display it! My afternoon class was "beginning floral Bucks" with Pat Hallam. We worked on two difference round pieces; one in the "pie-wedge" style and one worked from top to bottom. I was rather slow getting started (from lack of time to lace, lately) but picked up speed and confidence by the end of the week. I'm working on the second piece, a butterfly, in the evenings (when not sewing on my bonnet <g>). Pat provided several additional patterns that will be great incentive for me to continue improving. As always, the teachers were skilled, patient, and fun, and I learned many new things. My only regret is that I couldn't take more of the classes that were offered. I wish I had that little time travel device that Hermione used to double up on her classes in the Harry Potter series!! As others have mentioned, the Arachne lunch was a great place to meet up with old friends and put new faces with names. We received many goodies, the vendor's room was a dangerous place for my wallet, and we drank lots of water to cope with the altitude. My home is only 35' above sea level, so it was quite a change, for me. I don't know when I'll be able to attend conference next, but will be saving up and looking forward to it!
