Here's a beautiful Vermeer painting, The Lacemaker, no doubt some have seen
before....

<vbg> Arriving for the "hen party" my DH's cousin (and a personal dear friend) organised last weekend, I found, on my bed, a set of postcards (with envelopes), tied with a yellow ribbon... "Vermeer's Lacemaker!" I yelled, un-ladylike. "How do you know?" she asked a tad put off. "I collect stamps with paintings of lacemakers on them", I replied half-heartedly, while drooling over the top postcard...

She'd done it all on her 'puter (she may have only 15 yrs on me chronologically, but *ages* when it comes to manipulating the evil beast <g>) and she even put a lovely quote on the back (by Mark Harden. Don't ask me; an art critic, I suppose)...

"Contemporary Dutch painting portrayed industriousness as an allegory of domestic virtue. While the inclusion of the prayer book pays fealty to this theme, it is a secondary concern to the depiction of the handicraft of lacemaking, and, in the highest sens, the creative act itself. Once again, Vermeer succeeded in transforming a transitory image into one of eternal truth"

Now, isn't *that* nice??? I'm cheered, immensely, whenever a person who has nothing to do with lace begins to pay attention, however peripherally :) And she said I could have more of the cards when I ran out, as she has it all set up now...

I'm busily engaged in designing a pair of *large* wire earrings for her (she requested those rather than a box of of chocolates, as a "house gift", even if she has to wait for them - another indication she's a superiour kind of person <g>) and, when I'm done, I would like to include a quote with them. The quote I want (and can't locate, being 'puter-illiterate) is the one by John Ruskin, which starts something like:
"The real good of lace, then..."

Can someone find it for me, in full, pretty please? Date and source (publication) gratefully accepted :)
