I've used Abebooks a lot to track down books, but I've never used their services to obtain a book I was interested in. I've always contacted the bookseller direct, either by phone or by email, and dealt with them. Some accept credit/debit cards, other want a cheque. In 20 plus purchases, I've never had a problem doing it this way, even purchasing from overseas.
