As I missed the talk that Devon gave at the Denver convention on the Robber Barons, may I suggest that she does write it down, and along with copies of the slides, gives it to the IOLI Library so that lace guilds can use it for their programs. I know that Devon writes in an intelligent, humorous way and I was sorry that I could not hear her presentation.

I've heard/seen this talk in Ithaca last fall/autumn and I can attest that it was up to Devon's usual standard - hard-core scholarship intertwined with zany humour and presented with her dead-pan delivery - we may have been rolling in the aisles, but she never cracked a smile as she moved on to the next slide. I can't remember when I enjoyed a scholarly talk more; I'm not "into" scholarly most of the time...

But, as she says - the images belong to the Met, creating a possible copyright quagmire. And she's spent a lot of money on the equipment, not to mention volunteer time at the museum so they'd let her assemble the whole thing without the same restrictions which obtain when it's off the street hoi-polloi who wants to see this and that in the (behind the scenes) collection.

She gets paid for presenting the lecture. The amount she gets paid... Her accountant has estimated something like 10 yrs of twice-a-year presentation before she needs to pay taxes on the income; it'll take her that long to come out even.

She needed her huband's assistance in taking some of the pictures (which the Met had not taken or not taken in enough detail); for many reasons she needs her husband's assistance in presenting the lecture. That is - you get two people working, when you hire one.

As far as the Oz trip goes; I dare say she might be tempted - who wouldn't be <g> - but will Oz buy the round-trip tickets and assure room and board for two while they're there? I expect Devon might be willing to "eat" the charges for pet-housing etc during her absence (always providing the whole trip could be "orchestrated" to coincide with her husband's holidays)

I apologise for speaking out of turn but I have a hide harder than any hippo and Devon doesn't; she'd never talk "plain" on her own behalf, while I'm quite used to being the rain on everyone's parade and having my knickers flamed regularly.

The Laces of Robber Barons is a _fantastic_ talk. But, if you want it, buy it.
