Reading Tamara's description sounds like what I do. Best iron I own is my greatgrandfather's, a GE with settings for rayon, silk, wool, cotton, and linen (catalogue number 119F23, 1000 watts, 115 volts). Has a flat bottom, and the cord is bound by threads, even some gold for sparkle. Heavy thing too. I never heat it more than "wool" and since I severely don't trust "off" I unplug it when I'm finished. Over the years of sewing, I've managed to break 3 or 4 modern irons, usually knocking them off the board, or the thermostat goes, but this one I can't kill. Old faithful.
