Likewise in cities in general - but you mention 'our deviant
lifestyle.' Those of similar mind are likely to find us, perhaps in
just as devious ways.
The internet is a wonderful place: out of the blue, I was contacted
by a young university student anxious to learn lace, and buy supplies
but not by mail order. She subscribed to Arachne, wanted to understand
the lacemaking messages. It happened we had the lace conference, with
suppliers, in Victoria BC - she literally jogged into our suppliers'
room, happily bought bobbins and The Torchon Lace Workbook, and jogged
out again. I cannot know what path her lacemaking will take, I'd like
to think she might be one to offer a course eventually.

Yes, Lace Stuff in general is cumbersome -- but there are travel
pillows, particularly the A-frame with shoulder strap, or something
that tucks into the backpack can be rigged (a folding ethafoam plank
arrangement comes to mind). If there is to be the Ideal Lace Class in
the city - it has to have cachet to attract the young person.

LOL half the value is in the process - like attending lace conference
and finishing the class project - in terms of $ spent, the motif can
be worth upwards in the thousands of dollars (counting travel,
lodging, and of course class fee, purchase of extra materials, a book
to go with - the experience though is priceless ).

My first lace efforts seemed costly to me - in 1985 I paid $25 for the
pillow, $18 for the bobbins, $6 for the thread, $100 for lessons (20 @
5.00 each, including a pattern for each lesson), gas in my car to get
there and back and the evening with DH minding the kids, no time in
between lessons to practice, because I was mom-ming, determined to
'know' this interesting craft I'd seen demonstrated at a craft fair,
and not being any the wiser, for all the time spent, and feeling
poorer in the pocket, because I hadn't figured out the simplicity of
lace...and not for another 10 years - when I found the Arachne lace
list, suddenly a whole new world opened up (not to mention time became
available to me), and remains as stimulating, bless all the
decadonians
