Black - all the various shades of it - is an excellent background to
bring other colours out, as you noticed. But. It also tends to
"concentrate", especially when used on small projects (such as lace,
though I discovered it first when doing miniature needlepoint), so the
colours surrounded by it need to be fairly strong (primary) themselves
- which yours were - to show off well.
If you're using muted (non-primary) colours, in a small scale, I'd
strongly recommend charcoal brown (almost black, but not quite) to make
the contrast less aggressive.
