The 1881 census was an event; England & Wales has had a census every ten years since 1801. The actual ememerators' books are held by the National Archives, and are available on microfilm and fiche at many archives and Family History Centres throughout the world. The 1881 census was the first to be fully indexed for the whole country, by the Latter Day Saints (Mormon Church), and is available on CD-ROM and on-line, and is searchable by first name. That's what Malvery was referring to. The USA 1880 and the Canada 1881 censuses have also been indexed in the same way.

There were 5000 Irenes in USA, 1088 in Canada and 1054 in England/Wales, but only 66 Brendas in England/Wales, 40 in USA and 12 in Canada so I'm, VERY unlikely to find an old bobbin with my name on, though a couple of them were in Devon and one in Northants.

Hi Malvary and others,

Where does one look for the 1881 census? I have never seen an "Irene" bobbin, and I thought it was an old name. For that matter I have never seen a "Clara" bobbin either which is my first name and also thought it was an old name.
