Which takes me back several years to when our lace group had a day out
in Bridgnorth, Shropshire (actually, it was May 1993, thinking about it)
and visited the Museum of Costume and Childhood (I'm not sure if it is
still there, but I think it is) where they have some quite interesting
lace in their collection. One of the items displayed was a dress
previously owned by the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother,
(probably on loan) which had been made by Norman Hartnell. Even that
wasn't lined! There was also a tremendous lace flounce, made for one of
the European royal families from the symbols included in the design -
which was shown to us because we were lacemakers - you do need to
identify your interests to the staff when you visit the smaller museums!
One thing I remember was a board displaying crochet samples - most
unusual.

(Bridgnorth is one of the stations on the Severn Valley Railway, a
preserved line running steam trains on a daily basis most of the year;
it is not far from Telford where there are various heritage museums,
well worth a visit if you are coming to the UK and need to give in to
husband and children occasionally! It is also within easy reach of
Stourbridge - where The Lace Guild have their HQ, The Hollies).
