This is a brilliant idea! I hadn't thought of using the ribbon right
away. In this particular lace there are passives that are 'loose' and
if tensioned too much the lace is pulled (annoyingly). As soon as I
could, I wrapped the growing length around a roller and keep it wound
close to the work in progress. The roller I am using is actually a
pair of chopsticks still attached at the thicker ends, slip the lace
through the narrow gap and wind it around, two pins hold the unit to
the pillow through the same gap. Rather pleased with myself over that.
I had to try threading the ribbon through anyway - the appearance of
the lace improved 100% and it looked like a real garter! Another time
I am going to choose a pattern where I can thread the ribbon as I go.
It is more motivating to see it as it should be. Without the ribbon,
the lace looks like something is missing :)

Thankyou Lynn.
