Baking soda works a treat, especially if the scent from the deodorant bar or the dryer thingie aren't agreeable. or 20 Muleteam Borax - but don't get any on the pages. Best if you have a holder with a perforated lid. For books, you would want to flip pages from time to time to get out the embedded smell.
