Hi Everyone,
I've used this method on my scanner as well. It helps to "press" the lace a
little flatter when the scanner top comes down. Then there isn't a hump shadow
on those inevitable wrinkles. I discovered this when I scanned an old
handkerchief on very fine lawn. No matter what I seemed to do, the lawn found
a little space between the glass and scanner top to wrinkle around in (and the
lace edging followed). The rubber of the foamie sheet was perfect to hold it in
place and take up the extra space that allowed wrinkling. Plus the background
color added depth to the lace.
Thanks for the info Bev!

Light-coloured craft 'foam' (available by the sheet) is an excellent
background in the photocopier. Shadows on the lace are reduced. When
scanning, I prefer using a piece of fabric behind the lace, and it is
a nicer result than using the sheet foam behind the lace (in the
scanner). Conversely the foam background gave a better photocopied
image than the fabric background. I suppose it depends a lot on the
machine doing the scanning or copying.
