Thanks for all the info on the Canadian rebates. Although I only live 17 minutes from Canada (Campobello Island) I didn't know any of this information -- now printed out and put into my IOLI Montreal folder.

Unfortunately, I can't get a rebate on the lobster or haddock in my tummy when returning back home!

I am learning something new.
I decided to look up the GST refund. Apart from the short-term
accommodation, you can only use receipts for $50.00 purchases or
more, and have your receipts verified by a customs agent then you can
take them with you across the border, and mail them with the form for
the refund (in due course).
Info is here:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/rc4031/rc4031-e.html

Receipts for food, alcohol or tobacco cannot be used.
I note you wouldl be paying the Quebec sales tax of 7.5% while in QC,
where applicable, but you won't get any of that back, if I understand
the form correctly.
If the item is worth more than $250 you have to show it, along with
the receipt, to get the receipt stamped. Less than that, you just need
to send it with the boarding pass when you mail in for the refund.

As a seller of goods in Canada, I don't collect GST - my business
falling somewhat less than the $30K minimum sales level.

It would seem a worthwile exercise for the accommodation, anyway, if
costs are in the $3K arena, then 7% of that is worth getting back, and
you don't need to get any receipts stamped at the airport
