Ana Blanco used to urge us (lovingly) to try making and using a bolster pillow, citing the comfort and convenience of using one. She was so urgent and so loving about it that I did make one -- 20-odd years ago -- and am still using it happily, for certain large pieces. Ana said to stuff it with wool; I couldn't bring myself to do that to wool, so I stuffed mine with excelsior. I have not had Tamara's experience with "knees" in the excelsior, my knee-problems being confined to personal physiology.

But the big thing that Ana cited (and it's true!) is that you can stand the bolster up anywhere, a chair-back being the likeliest place, but just about anywhere that the level is comfortable for you. No "horses" needed. I gave my bolster a little bracelet on its side, and yes I do carry the bolster to workshops, meetings, etc. when it's right for the piece at issue at the moment.
