I hesitate to bring this up today - as our Arachne friends who attended
IOLI in Montreal are arriving home and getting back to reality and - for
many - the prospect of work tomorrow...
But the heat wave has affected everyone north of the equator, and there
have been some suggestions on how to relieve the heat. LAST year, I was
in Denver for IOLI, and one of the items in our "goodie" bags was a
bandana-styled neck piece. It is only two inches wide, but almost
44" long. On MY particular "Cool-it Bandana", the 17" in the center of
this piece is very loosely filled with - I "think" - silica gel, which
comes to us in small packages in items which need to be kept dry.
Someone who was involved with the production of this wonderful item in
Denver can chime in!! So my guess is that a 4.5" X 44" strip of fabric
was folded along the length, and the ends and side seams were sewn,
leaving an opening in the center. After turning and pressing, a short
seam was sewn across the 2" at about 12" from each end. I estimate that
only about 2 or 3 teaspoons of silica gel was placed into each bandana
at this opening, and then the opening was stitched shut. VOILA! a
"Cool-it Bandana"!
So how it worked was that we were instructed to soak the bandana in cool
water for 20 minutes. That tiny amount of silica gel absolutely filled
the entire center section of the bandana! When we tied this loosely
around our neck and wore this out in the (extremely dry) heat in Denver,
the evaporation of water from the silica gel acted as a cooling agent
for our bodies, and REALLY worked!!
Helen - you may be able to fill in the gaps or correct me if I've gotten
anything wrong!!
