I have been using those thin mattrasses for my pillows for a very long time now. They last for a very long time. I layered them the same way Bev intends to do. The nice thing is the material is rather inexpensive and the pins are held in place nicely.
I have received a used pillow as a present and only discovered later on that the middle was worn out. So I just added one layer of that foam on top of it and it is great.
