Hello Aurelia

I too remember Doreen Fudge with great affection, Luton was never the same post Doreen, always willing to copy 'anything and everything' and if the copy was not quite right she would say "Oh that's no good but you can have it anyway" (free of charge). Before the Luton sheets were tidied up and republished she very kindly photo copied every single one for me with a few extra samples she'd found. I've not heard anything about her for some years but I hope she is well and enjoying retirement - as you say - a lovely lady.

Regarding 'Rougemont House' Exeter - I would be happy to be proved wrong but I think lace disappeared from there some years ago. Another source of happy memories. When I visited I was left alone in what seemed like a broom cupboard with the most glorious items of lace including Mrs Treadwins sample books, many of the samples had fallen out and were just laying between the pages. Every little while the curator would come and check to see if I'd finished and bring me something else to drool over - Oh happy days.

Diana

I can hardly look at the word "Luton" without getting all teary-eyed and sentimental, remembering how dear Doreen Fudge, thirty years ago the lace curator at Luton, welcomed me and my DH, turned us loose among the Luton laces, and stayed with us and chatted about them, giving each piece the dear and familiar aspect of a friend, not just an item...long ago...do any Arachnes reading this know this lovely lady?
