Thank you Clay, Shirley, Brenda and Sue and Patty and Jane
Such wonderful help. I love the perfection of Patty's ending, but since the
piece is just a practice one, I think I'll keep this ending for a special
item. The only problem that I can see is that when the lace is worked good
side up so the braid can be seen and concealing the edge colors, threads
would have to be knotted on the back side under tension , thus creating a
lot of fiddling but worth it on a really good piece of work.
The other two explanations I've received: 1) cloth stitching the passives
through the braid and tying off on the backside, and 2) throwing out the two
inner threads from the braid, replacing with the passives and repeating when
coming onto the next two passives, tying off when finished.
I think #2 would be wonderful for a single color work. I'm going to go with
#1 at this time so the different colors will be hidden behind the braid.
Thanks for all the help

Subject: Re: [lace] Jana Novak Moravia Books
Yes, Jana Novak does have a good ending for a piece with a braid bottom.
Essentially, she takes each pair of passives half-way through the braid,
throws them aside, and continues across with the braid to the next pair.
Then she ties off the passives with knots which become hidden in the
braid. Jana admits that it helps to see it done, and her pictures are
very helpful... I hope I've been vague enough not to have violated her
copyright, but to give you the basic concept.
But sending you the pictures would definitely be in violation of her
copyright! However, I have just gotten her brand-new "Crib", the English
title of her new Christmas Nativity figures. It is wonderful, and because
it is written in several languages, I am able to understand her older
diagrams which had me puzzled. I love this book, and her technique of
finishing off "invisibly" is well illustrated and explained in it. I
recommend it for the Christmas designs, and for her excellent techniques.
Lacy Susan is listed in the book as the US source for the book.

I took Jane Atkinson's Logarithmic Lace class at Ithaca. This was an
exceptional class. Not only was the information wonderful and a new way
of looking at lace (for me), Jane is a wonderful teacher with being able
to deal with each student not only on their project, but also on their
individual expertise levels and personalitites. It was a wonderful call
and I highly recommend this class for either color theory or designing.
Now that I have reached the bottom of my pattern, I need some advice.
Jane said that Jana Novak's book had an interesting ending for a square
piece of lace with a braid border. I've done the braid border on the top
and sides and just can't figure out to braid in all the colored threads
and hide them along the bottom.
So, my question is, can anyone explain it to me in writing or does anyone
have a picture of this ending treatment that they can email me?
I would very appreciate the help and would like to finish this piece this
weekend.
