I have just returned home this morning from a beaut trip to Tasmania, where I visited the remains of the Female Factory in Hobart. Although only the 4 stone walls remain - it has a sad feeling about it.

We also visited Gerogetown, in the north of the State, and there I discovered more about the Female Factory - and the original one, which was at Gerogetown; and also displayed there was a small selection of the Baby Bonnets that started this whole project.

The bonnets are mounted on faceless heads, and form a cross.

I felt very sad, and very moved by it. There were 3 large information 'blocks' on the walls, and I got DH to photograph them, so I hope they come out. Of the 1200 babies born to these poor women, 900 are known to have died. The rest were taken from them after being weaned early, and removed to orphanages, where they never saw their mothers again.

I now plan to make an adult bonnet - and as I had my travelling pillow with me and made quite a bit of Bucks Point lace - "Church Window", or "Plum Pudding". I think it would be appropriate to put that on the bonnet!
