I always make them in my hand - holding the 3 passives spread between the fingers of the left hand, and threading the 4th bobbin (worker) under and over with the right hand (using it tail first.)
how I do them too if they shall be like leafs. Square ones and sickle-shaped ones I hold the outside two pairs with my fingers and through the runner to and fro. But at the moment I did tooooooo much picots with very thick pins and so my right hand forefinger is soar as Jean's finger.
