What if the lace was from a different dress and had been remade into this dress? That might explain the darts and tucks. We know they used to take lace off dresses and reapply it to new dresses.
On a tangent, that makes me suspect that's what I have with a length of black beds that has been cut and 'seamed'. Horribly seaming, and some of the lengths are about a yard long, but there are a couple of shorter ones joined in.
