For history and great pictures of the laces, I love "Lace a History". For analyse of the technical aspects of the various laces, use Elizabeth Kurella's book "Guide to Lace and Linens". The five basic features of lace are carefully detailed, and then each variety of lace is described using these details. It's not a history, but is a wonderful reference for identifying laces.
