I just received my Nordic Needle catalog. (This is a needle workers supply company that ships world wide-for those not in the USA). And it seems to have a tatting shuttle that appears to be what Tamara was talking about. It is

There is a fine point on one end and a more oval one on the other. 3" long in
metallicized plastic.
It appears to me that it could be used as an aficot.

I expect it could be, if the colour is stable and won't rub off onto the lace. But it's definitely not the same thing as the one I was talking about. Mine is *bone*. a) it's likely to be heavier than plastic (less pressure required) and b) it's in its natural colour (creamy white) -- nothing to worry about vis colour coming off.

OTOH... I'm not a vegetarian, either, so using bone doesn't bother me but it might be a consideration for others (same people who won't use silk). I've always preferred the "real stuff" over a man-made substitute. Am just discovering that even in the matter of something as basic as the work cloth, a real leather one is better than one made "plastic leather"/"skai" (such as I used while in Montreal but didn't bother to bring back with me)
