Probably just refers to the 'designs' on the bobbins which were put on using transfers instead of painting them. Transfers used to be able to be bought in sheets and were used for decorating a multitude of things - not all handcraft. I can remember putting transfers of teddy bears on the ends of DS's cot in the early 60's.

OK - I've found a curious description of bobbins on eBay. Granted, I know that some of these sellers have no idea what they're talking about. But - on the off-chance that I've missed a lacemaking term... does anyone know what this means??? The seller refers to the bobbins for sale, saying that "Some of the transfers on these bobbins are worn". So what is a transfer??? Link below. http://tinyurl.com/2a3sl8 Clay
