HI Jane,
I see that Carolina has answered you already about lacemaking here at
Calella and Arenys De Mar on the Coast. As Carolina knows more on the
history of lacemaking here in Catalunya than I do I can't add anything to
her commnets on that point.
Maybe what the person who told you about lace making in Calella saw
something of either the Lace Day held annually by the lacemakers who live in
Calella or they saw something of the classes held there. Like the UK and
other countries these days, lace classes are held all over Spain now but not
all parts have a history of being lace making centres in the same way that
lace is made all over the UK but only certain parts of England were
lacemaking areas in the past.
If you are going to be in in the area on Sunday 29th April this year, as
Carolina said, then you could catch the train, from wherever you are
staying, to Blanes Station and then catch the bus, waiting outside the
station, to Lloret De Mar where the Annual Lace Day for Catalunya is being
held, beginning at about 10am to approx. 5.30 with a break at mid day for
lunch. There will be approx 5,000 lacemakers taking part and working at
their pillows along the sea front, which is being closed to traffic, and us
ladies who live in Lloret that make lace are putting on an exhibition of our
lace in the town Museum. I have been asked to put in some of my English
pieces and an English pillow set up with my best bobbins as a contrast to
the local lace and equipment to show the differences between the two
countries, there could be a lace pillow or two from other countries too, I
am not sure. There will be around 50 suppliers also attending to sell their
wares, that is the usual sort of number for suppliers who come from France
and Belgium as well a those from around Spain.
It is a really great day but very noisy and hectic, 5,000 women all chatting
at once makes a lot of noise, that number will of course include a few men
and many young children making lace. If you can make this part of your
visit to this area of Spain you will have a lovely time I am sure.
Contact me if you think I can be of help.
Regards
Jenny DeAngelis
Spain.
