Personally, I would have called them "sequins". I have only seen the word "paillettes" and never heard anyone say it, but to me, they are the much larger discs, about the size of a US dime (ten-cent coin) or penny, like the white plastic ones I had on a horrible hat I never much liked as a child. And from this list, I think of a "spangle" as something you find on the end of a lace bobbin.
